With the first week of the new year behind us, it is time to look back, reflect but also look forwards to what 2021 has in store for us. At the start of last year, little did we know that we were about to live through one of the most exceptional years on our lifetimes. For many of us 2020 has been a year unlike any other, with challenges unlike any other. A year in which challenges turned into ordeals and in which we have had to postpone or cancel our future plans. Besides the threat to our health, one other fundamental aspect of our wellbeing has been available to us only scarcely: social interaction. Having to go against our basic need to connect to other human beings is difficult enough when all else is well – but how are those of us coping who are more in need than most? What if we find our wellbeing under threat by anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, fears, stress and other common afflictions? These are the times in which we have the highest need for social support and closeness to others.

And so our message for the new year remains the same: even under these special circumstances, please keep an eye out for each other’s wellbeing, as well as your own. And reach out and ask for help early. Do not underestimate the long-term added on effects of social isolation – there are people willing to listen!
We at Pondok Indah International Counseling are here to listen to you, to bring you in contact with likeminded people and social groups, or assist with tips & tricks, or professional counseling when needed.
We wish everyone a safe & joyous 2021, with good physical and mental wellbeing.
